  • Michael Beggen, co-owner of the Sweetwater New York Ice Company, which is based in Morrisville, serves up a Maraschino cherry and lemon Italian Ice cup from his ice cart on Fayetteville St., on April 23. Beggen states that Sweetwater has over 30 flavors of Italian Ice ranging from peanut butter to vanilla with chocolate chip chunks. The flavored ice is made in Queens, N.Y., from an 80-year-old recipe that uses real fruit and sugar.

Shamp has been growing a mustache for over 50 years and has been growing the very characteristic “handlebar mustache” for the last 10. Shamp stated that a little over 10 years ago he was cleaning some brush up from his yard after a storm and one of the tree limbs smack him across the face where his mustache was. The swipe of the tree branch left what appeared to be a Nike swooshes on his mustache and when he arrived back inside of his house his wife stated that she liked the look and he has been with the style ever since. Shamp uses all-natural beeswax from Oregon to finish off and style the ends to his unique “stache”.

  • Officers from the Raleigh Police Department form a barrier of bikes and bodies between protesters who gathered for the May Day protest, which was staged in front of the Old Wake County Courthouse, and the traffic along Fayetteville Street on May 1. Protesters gathered to voice their opinions against immigration, education and workers’ rights and to also demand a higher minimum wage of $15 an hour. May Day has its roots in the United States, starting in the early 19th century, which has helped initiate and implement conditions such as the 8-hour workday, a five-day workweek and workers’ rights.

Bryant chose this spot to play his drums because he received several complaints from neighbors and decided that along the interstate was good enough place as any due to the high volume of traffic noise. A few NC State Highway Patrol troopers have approached Bryant, who were just checking on him for safety concerns, but stated that he was not breaking any laws in playing along the side of the interstate and actually hung around to hear him play.
