  • Edward Curtis, a 97-year-old employee of Alfred Williams and Company, Raleigh, who started work at the business in 1935 and has been continuously working for the past 80 years, takes a moment to have a photograph of his hands made on April 15. Curtis started off as a driver and cook for the Williams family and then was drafted into World War II, eventually returning to Raleigh to start working at Alfred Williams and Company full-time and has been there ever since.

  • James Freeze, butcher at The Meat House in Cary, demonstrates how to butcher a whole hog during the Beer and Bacon Fest, which was held at Koka Booth Amphitheater on March 29. Freeze showed attendees of the festival where to find and identify choice cuts of pork to make different types of bacon, including American-style streaky bacon, Irish-style back bacon, Canadian bacon and jowl bacon. Freeze also went on to demonstrate where to find and butcher St. Louis style and baby back ribs, Boston butt, pork chops and other delectable cuts of pork.

Sylvester has been at this location 4-5 times a week for the past eight years, looking for donations mainly in the form of money to help make ends meet, but says he will take anything that a passerby will give him, which is primarily food, water, clothing and the occasional cigarette. Confined to a wheelchair and suffering from rheumatoid arthritis he takes the bus to this location and must cross a busy highway to “set up the box.” On a good day, Sylvester can make anywhere from 30-50 dollars.
