  • The Durham Bulls take a moment of silence before the start of the game on Opening Day at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on April 3. A crowd of 9,483 turned out to watch the 2013 Governors’ Cup champions in their season opener against the Gwinnett Braves. Late in the game Jerry Sands (35) hit a game-tying home run to help the Bulls rally past the Braves 7-6.

  • Sylvester, last name not given, poses for a portrait on Jan. 26, 2018, while “working his box,” as he says at the intersection of Highway 55 and Allendown Dr., Durham, N.C. Sylvester has been at this location 4-5 times a week for the past eight years, looking for donations mainly in the form of money to help make ends meet, but says he will take anything that a passerby will give him, which is primarily food, water, clothing and the occasional cigarette. Confined to a wheelchair and suffering from rheumatoid arthritis he takes the bus to this location and must cross a busy highway to “set up the box.” On a good day, Sylvester can make anywhere from 30-50 dollars.
